Assarel-Medet JSC Mining and Processing Complex is the first, biggest and leading Bulgarian company for mining and processing of copper and other types of ores providing more than 50 % of the national production of the vital metal for the human development - copper. The company is a main agent for the social and economic development and the image of the municipality of Panagyurishte and the district of Pazardzhik. It has a structure determining significance and a unique place in Bulgarian economy. Our strategic objective is to achieve a low cost-price per unit of the produced high quality metal copper and respectively for the produced concentrate, involved products and services through efficient complex utilization of raw materials in the healthy, safe and environment friendly mining operations.
The history of the leader in Bulgarian ore mining industry dates back to the official commissioning of Medet Mining and Processing Complex on December 29, 1964. Assarel-Medet Technological Mining and Processing Complex was established in 1986 by consolidating the Medet Mining and Processing Complex (1964-1994) and the newly built production capacities of the Assarel Mine and Concentrator Plant, commissioned on December 6, 1989. Assarel-Medet exists in the legal form of a joint-stock company since 1991 as its core activity is open pit mining and processing of copper and copper-pyrite ores, biochemical leaching of copper and the associated trade and engineering activities.
The first concession in the country for ore and minerals mining on December 23, 1998 and the first privatization in the Bulgarian mining industry on June 15, 1999 are written in the company’s chronicles.
Assarel-Medet JSC produces and offers for the country and abroad copper concentrates, cementation and cathode copper of high quality. It traditionally mines the biggest quantity of material in the Bulgarian ore mining industry and processes about 13 mln. tonnes of ore per year thus ensuring sustainable development and thorough utilization of the mineral raw materials of the Assarel deposit.

In 1999 the company was awarded with the first certificate for quality management in the mining industry in compliance with ISO 9001 and in 2002 it was awarded with the first certificate in the country for environment protection, ISO 14001. In 2003 it defended the first certificate in the country in compliance with OHSAS 18001 for occupational safety and health

Assarel-Medet JSC has been traditionally a pioneer in the mining industry with regards to the implementation of new state-of-the-art equipment and technologies
, which include the first in the Bulgarian ore mining industry Cyclic Flow Conveyor for mined material transportation and the Microbiological Copper Leaching Facility. The first in the country system for environmental monitoring, created jointly with the Bulgarian Academy on Science, has been successfully functioning on the territory of the complex since 1988. The company has been successfully implementing a program for removal of previous environmental damages caused prior to the company’s privatization which is funded based on an agreement with the World Bank. It invests annually significant funds in new environmental projects, innovation, human capital development and ensuring the highest standard of occupational safety and health.
Assarel-Medet JSC is the first Bulgarian company which in 2005 was awarded with Certificate for First Class Investor by the Bulgarian Investment Agency for its large-scale project for operations modernization at the amount of more than 100 mln. USD.
The company implemented unique for the country mining equipment and state-of-the-art flotation equipment, produced by leading world companies. Automated systems for technological processes control and monitoring were implemented in the Assarel Concentrator Plant which ensure high efficiency and peak production results for the industry.

As a promoter of the idea for gasification of the Srednogorie Region, Assarel-Medet is among the constituters of the Srednogorie Med industrial Cluster.

After conduction a public poll in 2003, the National Convent of Experts honored the company with the official statute of a company of high prestige and contribution to Bulgaria’s reputation. The company’s team is a bearer of the first Honorary Deed for merits to the town of Panagyurishte, bestowed for the significant and sustainable input to the municipality’s development.
In 2006 Assarel-Medet JSC was bestowed the award Ikar for Innovations by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce for the implemented state-of-the-art equipment and technologies. In 2007 the company was declared Investor of the Year in the Mining Industry by the Bulgarian Investment Agency and won the third place in the Investor in Environment contest by the Bulgarian Forum of Business Leaders. In 2007 Assarel-Medet JSC was declared as one of the Best Bulgarian Employers in the national research of Hewitt and the Capital newspaper and in 2008 it was acknowledged as one of the best employer in a regional research for Central and Eastern Europe.
